Action Station
Action Station is an accessible community performance project created by Samara, with and for the Corner Inlet community. The project involved workshops in dance, film projection and original sound design for a diverse range of community members. The participants were supported by a team of professional local artists in sound, costume and lighting. Together, they combined their significant talents to deliver an original dance work for public presentation as part of the 2022 Tea Cosy Festival.
The key artistic collaborators included costume design by Mayumi McPhee, sound design by Michael Shirrefs, film projection by Kate Russell, photography by Mardi Sommerfeld, and film by Sam Cross.
Performers: Hannah Bradsworth, Elowen Costin, Lynden Costin, Winy Yi Chan, James Friday, Tiffany Friday, Aiya Murray, Pippa Murray, Leticia Prosser, Isla Sands-Morris, Rachel Sands, Jasmine Susic, Marg Watson.
The experience of Action Station was literally uplifting. There's so much I value about my family's remote coastal lifestyle, but pandemic restrictions and childcare shortages left me feeling isolated from the community, cut off from essential support and utterly exhausted. I found my energy again through Action Station. I felt revived through the vulnerability and trust in the creative process which fostered a depth in new friendships not readily achievable in other settings. By the second half of the project, my focus was tuned to listening to my bodies inner 'voice', curious about how it wanted to move and respond to the unfolding creative collaboration.
